Euroasia Interconnector, the official project promoter of the electricity interconnection

JERUSALEM, May 30, 2016 – During the trilateral meeting in Jerusalem, the Director Generals of the Ministries of Energy of Israel and Cyprus and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Greece declared their unreserved support for the EuroAsia Interconnector electricity interconnection –via a 1,518 km submarine power cable– which will connect the power grids of Israel, Cyprus and Greece (via Crete) to those of Continental Europe. As they have noted, EuroAsia Interconnector project will contribute to achieving the strategic objectives of the countries involved; thus, the strengthening of both their energy security and energy markets.

We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Stelios Himonas, Director General of the Ministry of Energy of Cyprus, Mr. Michalis Verriopoulos, Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Greece, and Mr. Shaul Meridor, Director General of the Ministry of Energy of Israel, for their support. Furthermore, we welcome the prospects and intensification of cooperation between the three countries which opens up significant perspectives in the energy sector. We work hard to accomplish the EuroAsia Interconnector project and in cooperation with the competent authorities of the three countries, organisations and the European Commission we achieve progress on a daily basis. Moreover, we have concentrated our efforts on accomplishing the electricity interconnection between Cyprus, Greece and Israel within the implementation timelines –2017, 2019 and 2022– as approved by the

European Commission:

  • 2017 for Cyprus – Israel and commissioning in 2019.
  • 2017 for Crete – Attica and commissioning in 2020.
  • 2018 for Cyprus – Crete and commissioning in 2022.
