Estimated Budget: EUR 3,5 billion
Nicosia-Brussels – 15 February 2018 – EuroAsia Interconnector is a leading European Union Project of Common Interest (No. 3.10/2013/2015/2017), also labelled as an “electricity highway” by the European Commission, connecting the national grids of Israel, Cyprus and Crete-Attica in Greece and creating a reliable energy bridge between the continents of Asia and Europe allowing bi-directional transmission of electricity.

The project has already been co-financed in the form of grants, in two separate occasions, by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility for the execution of preliminary and final pre-works studies. An application to the EU for the co-financing of the construction of the project will be submitted during the “2018 CEF Energy Call for Proposals”.

EuroAsia Interconnector Limited, the Project Promoter of the interconnection, is currently in the planning phase of the procurement process for the construction of Stage 1 of the 2.000 MW electricity interconnector.

EuroAsia Interconnection Project is a multi-terminal VSC-HVDC scheme that connects Israel, Cyprus and Crete-Attica in Greece. In Stage 1 of the project, the HVDC Interconnector is designed for a transmission capacity of 1.000 MW at ±400 kV or more. The four converter stations, one at each location, consist of 2×500 MW VSC converters in bipolar configuration connected through submarine and land cables. More than 3.000 km of HVDC submarine cable, laid at water depths of up to 3.000 m, will be required for Stage 1 of the project only. The normal operating configuration of the HVDC links will be in bipole, with the neutral point at each converter location connected to a sea electrode acting as the return path for additional reliability.

The planned implementation dates for the commissioning of Stage 1 are:
• PCI 3.10.1 – Interconnection between Hadera (IL) and Kofinou (CY) – commissioning in December 2021 – Link 1
• PCI 3.10.2 – Interconnection between Kofinou (CY) and Korakia, Crete (EL) – commissioning in December 2021 – Link 2
• PCI 3.10.3 – Internal line between Korakia, Crete (EL) and Attica region (EL) – commissioning in December 2020 – Link 3

This notice is a periodic indicative notice only and has the purpose to inform potential Tenderers of forthcoming contracts which will be announced by means of a contract notice. EuroAsia Interconnector intends to publish the following contract notice (under Directive 2014/25/EU) concerning the following main lots in March 2018:
• Construction of the four converter stations multi-terminal VSC-HVDC scheme with a transmission capacity of 1.000 MW at ±400 KV or more.
• Design, manufacturing and commissioning of the HVDC and MVDC submarine and land cables for the three Links.
• Installation of the HVDC and MVDC submarine and land cables for the three Links.

The characteristics of the three links are:
Link 1: Israel-Cyprus: onshore-13 km, offshore-310 km, m.w.d.-2300 m
Link 2: Cyprus-Crete: onshore-18 km, offshore-896 km, m.w.d.-2965 m
Link 3: Crete-Attica: onshore-37 km, offshore-335 km, m.w.d.-1200 m

The periodic indicative notice was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 15/02/2018 with publication number 2018/S 032-070566.
