“We express our strong support for the establishment of the East-Med Pipeline (Eastern Mediterranean) as another gas corridor, directly linking gas findings in Cyprus’ and Israeli EEZs with the European markets. Our Governments support cross-sector synergies between the EuroAsia Interconnector project and fiber optic connections that will provide enhanced cooperation concerning the deployment of interconnection between Europe, Middle East and Asia.”

European Union – European Commission – European Parliament

At the geo-political level, EuroAsia Interconnector’s strategic partnership with the European Union and the European Commission has been evidenced by the strong support of all EU bodies, including the European Parliament. The EuroAsia Interconnector has been designated as a Project of Common Interest (PCI).

1. The interconnection has been characterised as a European Project of Common Interest (PCI) and an Electricity Highway, necessary for the implementation of priority corridors and energy infrastructure according to Regulation (EU) No. 347/2013 and is listed on the 3rd Union list established by the European Commission Decision (2017) 7834 final, 23.11.2017. The Regulation (EU) No. 347/2013 has general application and is binding in its entirety and directly applicable for all EU members states.

2. The PCI 3.10 EuroAsia Interconnector (Israel-Cyprus-Greece) is included in TYNDP (The European Ten Year National Development Plan) of ENTSO–E2 (European Network Transmission Systems Operator – electricity), which includes the transmission projects to be implemented at the European level.

3. As the official project promoter of the PCI EuroAsia Interconnector, have proceeded to all necessary actions provided in the Regulation (EU) No 347/2013 for the progress of the development of the PCI EuroAsia Interconnector. In particular, given that the PCI EuroAsia Interconnector has reached sufficient maturity, we submitted an investment request for a cross-border cost allocation to the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) in Greece and to the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA), which RAE and CERA considered complete and, based on which, RAE and CERA reached an agreement on the cross-border cost allocation of the PCI EuroAsia Interconnector on 10 October 2017 (published in the Official Gazette of the Cyprus Government).

4. The construction of the Cyprus-Israel part of the EuroAsia interconnector is planned to be completed by the end of 2023 and the Cyprus-Crete part by 2023.
